I always talk about how magical Michigan is; Fall is no exception. The transition here from Summer to Fall is breathtaking. I’ve put together a road trip through Western Michigan so you can peep at some of the best leaf colors in our area. It’s roughly 3-4 hours long without stops, but trust me – you’ll want to stop and soak in the views and check out some of the shops in the cute little towns along the way.
We’ll start this trip with a visit to 5 and a Half North Farm, of course!
Stop #1: Arcadia
Our first stop takes us to Arcadia, just a 20-minute drive from Bear Lake. The Arcadia Overlook is a pit stop along Highway 22 that many people stop at because it offers a panoramic view of Lake Michigan and the surrounding fall foliage. Metal steps will take you up to a viewing platform where you can easily spend 15-20 minutes walking around and enjoying the views.
Stop #2: Frankfort
When you leave the Overlook, you’ll drive 20 minutes north on 22 up to the charming little town of Frankfort. Once there, you can take a leisurely stroll along the beach to view the contrast of the fall leaves against the blue waters of Lake Michigan. Downtown Frankfort has many boutique shops and cozy restaurants.
Stop #3: Crystal Lake
Crystal Lake is a beautiful name for this lake because it has such clear, turquoise to deep blue waters. The surface acts like a mirror, reflecting the colors of the trees. It’s picture-perfect!
Stop #4: Glen Arbor
When you Leave Crystal Lake, you can either go up the coast along Highway 22, where you can stop at Point Betsie Lighthouse and drive along Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes National Lakeshore, or you can go inland just a bit and take 33 through Beulah and Benzonia where you can check out the Cherry Hut’s jams or restaurant or Five Shores Brewing.
If you take the shoreline route, there are multiple places to stop and hike in Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. Once you’ve made it to Glen Arbor, you can visit one of the many scenic wineries in the area.
Stop #5: Leland
When you visit this historic fishing town, you’ll feel like you’re stepping back in time. Leland is an active fishing village, so you’ll see many weathered shanties, fishing boats, and nets hanging out to dry. There are several charter services available if you’re looking for adventure. Oh, and don’t walk past The Dam Candy Shop without stopping in!
Stop #6: Suttons Bay
Suttons Bay is a great little place to check out if you love craft beer. They’re a quaint coastal community with art studios, wineries, restaurants, and many unique local businesses with an “Up North” appeal. Scenic sailboat cruises are even available!
Stop #7: Thompsonville
Finish your trip with a relaxing ride up the Crystal Mountain color chairlift. They close at 2 p.m., so if you plan to leave later in the day, you may want to make this your first stop.
Conclusion
This road trip will take you through some of the most colorful areas in western Michigan during the peak of the fall season. The best time to go is from mid-September to late October. Be sure to plan for stops and explore at your own pace. There’s plenty to see and do in our magical state!
