Bear Lake is nestled in a rural area of Michigan and, like spokes on a wheel, all roads lead to adventure. Historic Manistee is straight up 31 with the bustle of Traverse City further north. Ludington, home to two of Michigan's most-photographed lighthouses, is south at the mouth of the Pere Marquette River. Beaches, unique shops, and small-town charm surround us at Frankfort, Onekema, and Beulah.
If you're an outdoor enthusiast, Bear Lake is the central vacation spot for all things outdoors. Campgrounds and national forests are all around the area. Crystal Lake, Portage Lake, and Lake Michigan are all just a short distance away, and fishing - especially for salmon - is a big deal here. If fishing isn't your thing, tubing and kayaking are other beloved river activities.
This area of Michigan offers so many picturesque views. It's one of the reasons we moved here and why I want to share it with you through catered picnics!

When should you picnic?
Late Spring (May to June):
Late spring offers mild temperatures and comfortable weather for picnics in the Bear Lake area. All the trees and shrubs begin to unfurl their leaves, wildflowers are in bloom, and local wildlife, such as deer, foxes, black bears, and other native animals, are awakening.
Summer (June to August):
Summer is the prime picnic season in West Michigan due to its warm and sunny weather. Our beaches and lakeshores are inviting during these months for picnics and water-related activities, and longer daylight hours provide ample time for picnicking, hiking, and exploring.
Local produce and farmers' markets are in full swing too, allowing for fresh, seasonal ingredients like blackberries, blueberries, broccoli, cherries, cucumbers, nectarines, peaches, peppers, tomatoes, and strawberries.
If you want to experience local culture, Bear Lake Days in mid-July offers a variety of unique activities, such as a Lego Challenge, Golf Scramble, Pig Roast, Horse Pull, Lumberjack Show, Boat Parade, and "Light Up Bear Lake Days," where the shoreline is set aglow with lights and lanterns.

Early fall offers pleasant, crisp weather. The fall foliage in the surrounding forests and along the lakefront is absolutely stunning, providing a picturesque backdrop for your picnic.

It's also a great time to go apple picking, visit a winery, or hike one of the wild places. Not to mention, fewer crowds make it a quieter and more serene time to enjoy nature.
Winter (November - April):
While winter can be cold in Michigan, we offer picnics around a cozy fire or in an igloo or tent. Multiple trails are nearby for snowmobiling, with trailheads conveniently starting at the Saddle Up restaurant.
When planning your picnic, consider any specific events or festivals in the area that might impact your picnic plans, and always follow local regulations and guidelines for outdoor activities. Picnic Safety and Etiquette
Picnicking near Bear Lake, Michigan, can be a delightful experience, but it's important to prioritize safety to ensure everyone has a wonderful time. Here are some safety tips for picnicking in this area.
Check the Weather Forecast
Weather varies yearly, so check the local forecast for Bear Lake and the surrounding areas before you go. Sudden weather changes can affect your picnic plans, so being prepared for rain, wind, or temperature fluctuations is crucial.
Choose a Safe Location
Select a safe and designated picnic area, such as a park or beach, that is well-maintained and hazard-free. Pay attention to any posted rules or regulations in the area.
Sun Safety
If your picnic is during sunny weather, protect yourself and your guests from sunburn by wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, and wide-brimmed hats. If you choose a catered picnic with 5 1/2 North, we'll provide a pop-up canopy or ensure you have a pavilion for your event.
Stay Hydrated
Bring plenty of water, especially on warm days. Dehydration can sneak up on anyone, so encourage everyone to drink plenty of fluids throughout the picnic. If you choose to have us cater, we can create custom labels for your water bottles!
Food Safety
Pack and store your food properly to prevent foodborne illnesses. Use coolers with ice packs to keep items that should be cold at a safe temperature, and don't leave your food in the sun for too long.
Allergies and Dietary Restrictions
During your planning phase, ask your picnic attendees if they have food allergies or dietary restrictions. Label or separate items to accommodate their needs. If that sounds like a lot of work, book a picnic with 5 1/2 North Farms. We offer gluten-free, diabetic- and celiac-friendly options.
Wildlife Awareness
Bear Lake and its surroundings are home to wildlife. While encounters are rare, you need to know what to do if you encounter animals like bears or raccoons. Two main things to remember: keep a safe distance between you and them, and don't feed them.
First Aid Kit
Carry a basic first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers. You can also be prepared for minor injuries or insect bites.
Fire Safety
If you plan a barbecue or campfire, follow local regulations and ensure fires are allowed in your picnic area. Keep a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby for safety.
Water Safety
If you're picnicking near the lake, keep a close eye on the kiddos. They can get away from you before you know it. If your kids are swimming, make sure they are wearing appropriate floatation devices. Be cautious of currents and underwater hazards.
Insect Protection
Depending on the season, insects like mosquitoes can be prevalent. Bring insect repellent and consider using citronella candles or lanterns to deter bugs.
Leave No Trace
Practice Leave No Trace by cleaning up after your picnic. Dispose of trash in a trash bin or dumpster, and recycle when possible. Leave the natural environment as you found it!
Emergency Contact Information
Have access to emergency contact information and a charged phone in case of unexpected situations. You may want to carry a portable battery charger with you just in case your phone does get low.
By following these safety tips, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable picnic experience near Bear Lake, Michigan. Planning ahead and being prepared will help you make the most of your time in this beautiful natural setting.
