I loathe New Year's resolutions. Some people love them. I don't. Here's why:
They don't work.
Few people set realistic expectations, and they end up disappointed when they seemingly "fail" by not reaching those expectations or just quitting when things get a little out of their comfort zone.
Most people do not understand what a paradigm is, let alone the self-work it takes to change it. But I'm hoping to help you change that so you can set goals that do work.
Grab a cup of tea, settle in, and let's begin a journey of self-discovery and intentional living together!
Happy 2024! I'm glad you're here because it means you want to set some goals this year that you can actually reach. This post will talk about how I realized I needed to be more intentional about my goals and desires and began to obtain those things once I became specific and intentional about my wants.
My journey began with a lack of clarity regarding my own dreams, prompting a deep dive into self-discovery to find my true identity and purpose.
This transformation process was kick-started by watching The Secret. Then, I sought guidance from a mentor and completed the Bob Proctor Coaching Program. After graduating from the program, I founded an International Book Club that focused on the inner drive to discover and create.
I formed my mentoring business and named it "Intentional Living." This was a conscious choice to highlight the importance of setting and acting on our intentions in life.
An intention, defined as a determination to act in a specific way, is at the core of intentional living for me. It involves guiding my life with purpose and courage and assisting others in uncovering their unique paths.
Living intentionally means navigating a life rich with possibilities, maintaining balance, and discovering joy in the present moment. As a self-proclaimed dreamer who celebrates individuality, I firmly believe that each person is an architect of their own life.
Despite the nature of my work aligning with "coaching," I wanted to avoid this term so I didn't seem like another internet guru with cookie-cutter ideas that are supposed to fit everyone's situation.
From my perspective, life resembles a unique pathway where our dreams contribute to the journey and purpose we create - to discover who you are, what you love, what inspires you, and what your dreams are. Get clear on your vision for your life.
Once you do that, it's almost like holding the genie's lamp.
In Will Smith's version of Aladdin, Aladdin says, "Hey, can you make me a prince?"
Genie responds, "There is a lot of gray area in 'make me a prince' and advises Aladdin to "be specific with your words; the deal is in the detail."
This lesson holds profound meaning for inner expansion, which is the most significant goal you will ever work on because it aligns your energy with discovering and fulfilling your purpose.
How I've seen this work in my life
Every Wednesday, Jamie and I used to have a date night where we would catch dinner and dream together after work. During our search for a country house, and after a series of setbacks with a potential purchase, Jamie affirmed, "I AM GOING TO BUY A HOUSE THIS WEEKEND," and we did.
As I reflected on that affirmation, I remembered a napkin we used to jot down our goals, which I rediscovered later in my jewelry box. The goals written on that napkin have all transpired, emphasizing the power of specificity in manifestation.
One remarkable example was our farmhouse. Despite seeming impossible, we found and purchased our dream fixer-upper a few days after letting go of expectations.
Before that, our schoolhouse, an 1800s blank slate near my great-grandparents' homestead, allowed us to create exactly what we envisioned. This experience marked my first lesson in manifesting and the profound influence of emotion behind a goal.
Selling my cleaning business, finding the right people to help me with my dreams, forming partnerships, starting the farm... there has been one instance after another where I've been specific, gotten started, and reached a goal.
Conclusion
This year, we're going to start discussing how I made all these things happen and how you can reach your goals and fulfill your desires too. Everyone deserves the life they want, and it all starts with Intentional Living.
